Reclaiming My Revolution
This poem was created for She Loves Magazine. I was given the theme of Ubuntu and invited to write a poem centering that theme. This was one of two poems that I submitted for this topic. We decided to go with a different poem to poetically convey the message of Ubuntu. What I love about this poem is that it’s an erasure poem that uses language from a software developer in order to find the true meaning of Ubuntu. It interested me how this term — rooted in South African solidarity and liberation from apartheid — becomes appropriated by the very white and very male world of software development. As the title states, I am reclaiming my revolution through erasing the appropriations of an ignorant oppressor.
